CURRENT SITUATION AND MEASURES TO ATTRACT VIETNAMESE DIASPORA’S CONTRIBUTION FOR THE SOCIO - ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF HANOI

On July 7, 2016, Hanoi City Department of Foreign Affairs in coordination with the Asian Management and Development Institute held a seminar on "Current situation and measures to attract Vietnamese diaspora’s contribution for the socio - economic development of Hanoi".

The seminar was conducted within the framework the Project "Assessing the current contributions of the Vietnamese diaspora to Hanoi, especially on the areas of science and technology and business and trade; Research on related policies, recommendations on policy and policy implementation adjustment to attract Vietnamese diaspora’s participation in the development of Hanoi City". Besides other data collection tools included expert consultation, questionnaire survey and interviews, seminars were conducted to gather more information on the researched issues.

The seminar was chaired by Mr Pham Vinh Quang - Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs, with the participation of the representatives of AMDI Expert team, Mr. Nguyen Phu Binh - Chairman of ALOV - Former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs – Former Chairman of the State Committee on Vietnamese diaspora and representatives of Ministries, Hanoi city’s Departments and overseas Vietnamese investors, intellectuals and scientists.

After the opening speech by Mr Pham Vinh Quang, Mr. Nguyen Phu Binh on behalf of the AMDI Expert team presented preliminary survey results on overseas Vietnamese current contributions to Hanoi, their related difficulties and needs. The delegates from Hanoi City’s Departments gave comments to improve the research results. At the same time, the overseas Vietnamese participants were eagerly to express their opinion on the achievements and constraints of the policy and policy implementation to attract overseas Vietnamese as well as to suggest a lot of measures to remedy the issues.

The information provided by the participants at the seminar will be analyzed to complete the research results. Hopefully, the recommendations from the research would help improve the attraction of Hanoi’s towards overseas Vietnamese.
